JEF Belgium

JEF Belgium is a proud ‘founding member’ of the JEF Cross Border Network. Located in the beating heart of Europe, Belgian JEFers see it as their duty to reach out across the borders and strengthen the interregional ties of young pro-Europeans located in Europe’s center.

Though vital to the working of the Cross Border Network, JEF Belgium took a bit of a prolonged hiatus last year. We are happy to announce that now, the Belgian team is getting back on track and looking to revive itself!

2nd Cross-Border Seminar through Simona’s eyes

On Friday, November 8th, I found myself sitting in a train heading to  as a representative of JEF-Liège. Expectations, excitement, worries, feelings of unknown, maybe a bit of fear was crossing my mind when I was dragging my luggage through rainy Lille, passing magnificent Le Palais des Beaux-Arts. After asking eight strangers on the street, challenging my (poor) map reading skills, and using “phone-a–friend” option more than necessary …

Why Lille is the perfect place for our 2nd Cross-Border Seminar

F1000015As president of the hosting section, I am pleased to welcome you to the wonderful, European city of Lille! One word of history: Lille is the former capital of Flanders. Throughout history, the city has been Flemish, English, Spanish and even a bit German – so it is difficult to find another such European place in France. We are proud not to be perfectly French!

The 1st Cross-Border Seminar on European solidarity

Even upon arriving at the hostel in Maastricht, the fatigue was already visible on the faces of the organization team. If the work put in would match the outcome, we were going to have a great seminar. After the registration, the seminar was immediately under way. Of course the obligatory ice breaking games couldn’t be left out before we made our way to the ‘welcome dinner’.  The welcome speech was delivered by the mayor of Maastricht, Onno Hoes, who stated “If the Young European Federalists still need their own youth capital, you’re more than welcome in Maastricht!” …

20th Birthday of the Maastricht Treaty: towards more European solidarity and stability in times of economic turmoil

*Vous pouvez trouver la version en français ici: Le Taurillon.

In light of the ECB announcement to start a conditional but unlimited bond-buying program, the state of the union of Barosso in which he announced to work for closer integration, the loss of the extreme Eurosceptic parties in the Netherlands and the ruling of the German constitutional court, one could easily become optimistic in regard to the prevailing European challenges. Alas, the Eurocrisis lingers on and the centripetal economic and nationalistic forces are slowly disintegrating the European Union with little efforts to stall, let alone reverse the process.
